On first glance, New Media at Concordia seems like a contradictory statement.
This is a small college in Bronxville, NY. New media is an industry that is constantly growing more prominent in our modern world.
The question is, then, how can a small school house the expanding giant that is new media?
The answer: Quite well.
In truth, Concordia and new media complement one another perfectly. The new media area of study fits perfectly into the Concordia experience.
The new media area of study embodies virtually all of the components of Concordia College that make the school so appealing. It is small, but it is also intensely personal. It involves learning the technology, of course, but it also involves forming connections. Our classes are like a close-knit community, and we all work together to help one another grow as individuals.
We work together to ensure that, by the end of the semester, each member of our community emerges with an impressive body of work that is also intimate and introspective.
Additionally, the films themselves demonstrate that new media at Concordia is also part of the global community. Our work does not subscribe to one particular vision. It pulls from everywhere and everything. “We make movies” is just about the only way that I can think to describe it.
We make movies.
We make movies about our families; about the way our parents met one another, about the way that we were raised, about the struggles that we go through together.
We make movies about faith; about all of our different perceptions of it and the way that we show it every day.
We make movies about literature; inspired by books and poetry, we assign moving visuals to the words that first moved us.
We make movies about the universal struggles that move us; about the struggle for equality and peace.
We make movies about the struggle to repair those places and those people who are damaged.
We make movies about the things that we know and the places that are important to us.
We make movies that are funny and quirky. We make movies that are personal and moving.
We make movies that are socially conscious.
We make movies.
But, watch the films. Let them speak for themselves. Let them get under your skin and affect you the way that they have affected all of us. This is the only way to really understand the connection that exists in New Media at Concordia, and what it really means to us. |
